Axes and hatchets: which ones to choose

Those who like to spend a lot of time in the garden know that taking care of the greenery requires more than just power tools. There are some operations that require the use of hand tools such as axes and small hatchets.

These words are often used as synonyms, but they actually have different characteristics and functions. What you need to do also influences the choice: felling a tree, performing limbing operations, or splitting wood are operations that have specific needs and therefore require appropriate tools.

Axes and hatchets: the differences
The first difference is the length of the handle.
Axes have handles about twice as long as small hatchets. This is due to the fact that axes are used to work on very large woods and therefore it is necessary to hold the tool with two hands. In contrast, the small hatchets is used with only one arm for operations on small woods.
In addition to the handle, we have the head, the real star of the tool: the razor-sharp blade, hardened, made from C45 steel.
For both the axe and the small hatchet; the head can have different shapes for specific uses for different types of wood. In addition, the axe can also be double-sided and thus have two sharp sides.

We can summarize the above as follows.

Elements of an axe:
  • C45 steel blade, optionally also double-bladed
  • Long handle for use with two hands
  • Wooden or iron fastening wedge of the blade to the handle
Elements of an small hatchet:
  • C45 steel blade, with only one cutting side
  • Short handle for being wielded with one arm
  • Wood or iron fastening wedge of the blade to the handle
